In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of tractor-trailers (semi trucks or big rigs) on US roadways. Concurrently, there has also been a significant increase in accidents and fatalities related to these tractor-trailers.

According to Traffic Safety Facts reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one out of nine traffic fatalities in 2007 resulted from a collision involving a large truck. Large trucks are defined as those with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds. In 2007, 413,000 large trucks were involved in collisions in the USA and 4,584 of them involved fatal crashes. Over 4800 people died in those crashes and another 101,000 were injured. Of those fatalities, 75% were occupants of another vehicle.

Each state has its own laws regarding the types of damage that are recoverable in an auto accident. There are many different sources of possible recovery for auto accident victims, and it is important that they are all identified. In trucking cases, it is important to also investigate the causes of the trucker’s negligence including mechanical failure, fatigue or road conditions as well as investigating the claims history of the trucking company to determine if the company itself has failed to maintain safety standards.
